"One of my first California
landscapes featured a large oak tree in the foreground. I decided to
paint a carved heart on the trunk of the tree. One day, I showed the
painting to my friend Violet Parkhurst, a well-known seascape artist.
Violet liked the heart, and suggested that I include the image in
future paintings as a symbol for my love of nature. Great idea!
Since then, I have placed one or more hidden hearts in all of my
landscape and seascape paintings. Sometimes a rough impression of the
heart shape emerges spontaneously as I paint; perhaps in a clump of
tree leaves, a pattern in a cloud, or the texture of a rock. I only
need to alter it a bit. People enjoy studying the details of my
paintings trying to find the hidden hearts.

find the hidden hearts!
